Kenya 24-21 Argentina

Kenya beat Argentina 24-21, scoring three second-half tries. In a tight first half Bush Mwale scored for the Africans, before Santiago Alvarez levelled.
A double from Tony Opondo and Mwale’s second opened the match up for the Kenyans, before Segundo Tuculet and Francisco Merello struck back late for Argentina, but it was Kenya who claimed eight series points.
“It was a good game,” said Opondo.
“The Argentines were really tough in attack and we needed to make up for losing to them in the pool stages in the last few rounds. This win also makes up for losing to Fiji here last year.”The Kenya Sevens Rugby Team has been pooled against England, United States and in Wales for the Hong Kong IRB series. The series will be held between 27th and 29th of March.

The national team will jet in home tomorrow in the morning and they are expected to take a one week break before resuming training.

Kenya will be boosted by the return of former captain Humphrey Khayange and Augustine Lugonzo who have been out nursing injuries.
Shujaa has now managed to collect 18 points in the last two legs and currently lie in 12th place in the IRB rankings with twenty nine points.

However former vice Captain Gibson believes the national side has shown sides of improvement even though he admits a lot needs to be done heading to the final four legs.

“There is so much work in progress to be done; we need to work on our defence, we need to concentrate more and make those tackles when they matter” Said Weru.

Kenya was punished in their second match against Argentina and Weru says it’s a game we should we have won if we had defended well. He had the same opinion on the first match against Canada.

“If you look at game one against Canada, we really struggled and conceded very soft tries and then we had to work extreme hard to win the game” The former Nakuru RFC outfit said.

Weru says Kenya should have played in the main cup quarter finals if we had not made a slow start against Argentina. Kenyan almost won the match after brilliant display in the second but luck was not on their side.

“If you look at the way we are playing, we are playing very well, we are working extra hard to try and recover to change the game, I believe we are moving in the right direction , by the time we go to Hong Konga and Japan we should be able to play In the main cup final’ He added.

The former captain was full of praise for Lavin Asego who once again had a brilliant tournament scoring his 50th IRB series try and becoming the country’s all points top scorer, surpassing Collins Injera.

“If you look at the games, making those passes, leading the players, directing them very well, he was outstanding” he concluded.
