For the second year running, Nairobi has been ranked the most intelligent city in Africa. The study, which is done annually by Intelligent City Forum, a New York-based organisation, placed the Kenyan capital ahead of the pack on the continent. Nairobi was however, nowhere near the top ten cities on the globe. According to the Forum, “intelligent communities” or cities, are those perceived to have taken “conscious steps” to create an economy that can prosper in the “broadband economy”. This means Nairobi, alongside the other 21 listed cities, has built an inclusive and prosperous economy that is based on a highly advanced use of information technology. The Kenyan capital has one of the highest mobile telephone penetration rates in Africa at 75 per cent, and 17.3 million Internet users. Nairobi is the only African city on a shortlist of 21 hubs across the globe.NAI
